Freebie for January 14, 2013

It is the 14th of the month again, so Wise Owl Factory is here with the monthly free printable for the Pre K and K Sharing blog. I hope you all had a fabulous holiday season full of good memories and the new year is going well for you and your students.

This month the focus is on basic color words with a Dress the Snowman game and work pages.  To help develop visual discrimination skills and further the understanding of colors, there is a game to differentiate between stripes or dots, and some clown puzzles.  

I remember my son coming home from preschool and telling me he was learning about red.  I asked him if he didn't already know what red was.  He replied, "Mom, there is a lot you don't know about red.  We are studying it."  That was probably true as learning about colors ties in with so many other skills.  The dots or stripes game should help address the kindergarten common core standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.

The game can be used in different ways:  using only the picture cards by printing twice pairs could be matched, or picture and word pairs could be matched.


The clown puzzle is my own adaptation of a game we bought when we lived in the Netherlands, which was a boxed puzzle.  There was only one clown in the game, but it was several sizes.  Children think this is quite fun when the sizes are mixed and matched.  If a die is used, the children can select a puzzle piece with the corresponding number to play as a game.
